Shop until you drop if you want to shift the kilos: study

JUST like any other woman, Rockhampton's Rachelle Carige has spent many hours walking around shopping centres looking for the perfect outfit or accessory.

"I once spent an-hour-and-a-half walking around a shopping centre in Brisbane, until I found the perfect clutch to go with an outfit for the races," the 24-year-old store manager at Cooper's said yesterday.

But those hours spent shopping may be paying off for women in many ways. A new study revealed the average woman burns 15,000 calories shopping every year, proving it's not just the credit card that gets a good workout.

"When I'm on a day off, I will have a wander around the shopping centres," Rachelle said.

"And I usually hit the shops when I'm in Brisbane visiting people."

Rachelle is one of many racking up the kilometres, with the study showing women cover 290km a year, equivalent to seven marathons.

And despite online shopping becoming a phenomenon, the survey showed 58% of women would gladly head to their favourite store if they knew it would aid their efforts to lose weight.

Shopping Facts

  • Women who shopped for more than 17 hours a week and spent more than $200 were slimmer and healthier than those who spent less time in stores and spent less money.
  • 74% of women admitted they thought about shopping at least once every minute.
  • Two of five women claimed they were shoe and bag addicts.
  • Women-shopaholics had fewer wrinkles and felt much younger than those who disliked shopping.
  • During a lifetime, a woman would spend 25 days, 184 hours and 53 minutes shopping.
  • The majority of women who loved shopping were more confident and less likely to suffer from depression.
