TWO people killed in Monday's fiery car crash near Maryborough have been revealed as a brother and sister who were on their way back to Brisbane after visiting their hometown of Bundaberg.

Sarah Walker, 30, and Daniel Walker, 22, were travelling to Nundah, in Brisbane's northeast. Also in the car was Sarah's 14-year-old son and her friend Peter Knowles, 25, also from Brisbane.

Their car was struck head-on.

The impact killed Sarah and Daniel instantly

Sarah's son and Mr Knowles survived thanks to the heroics of an off-duty doctor who was among the first on scene.

The teen remains in a critical condition at Royal Brisbane Hospital, while Mr Knowles is in a stable condition after surgery for significant lower body injuries and burns.

A 55-year-old woman also involved remains in a critical condition at the same hospital.

Mr Knowles, also from Bundaberg, has been told he needs to learn how to walk again after sustaining two broken legs and two fractured vertebrae.

His mother Trisha Mabley was able to speak to him briefly yesterday following the first of what are expected to be many operations.

A crowd-funding account has been set up by Mr Knowles' sister Emma-Louise Schmidt to help pay for his surgeries. It has so far raised more than $1100.

"We all know that money won't help the emotional healing but the physical will be a lengthy process," Emma-Louise wrote online.

Police have not ruled out laying charges over the crash.

Investigations indicate that one of the cars veered onto the wrong side of the road while overtaking, clipping one oncoming vehicle before colliding with a second.

Sarah and Daniel's deaths are the fifth and sixth on the Bruce Highway in just three weeks.
