Man caught with 150,000 child porn videos, images

A 74-YEAR-old Kawungan man will spend six months behind bars after he was caught with more than 150,000 child pornography videos and images on electronic devices.

The man pleaded guilty in Hervey Bay District Court to possessing child exploitation material, using a carriage service to make the material available and using a carriage service to access the material.

The court heard that in early 2015 police conducted investigations which led to the discovery of the extensive, graphic content.

The images and videos were found on the man's computer as well as DVDs, VHS and CDs.

OUR SAY: Why it's time for real change in court

More than 100,000 images were found as well as thousands of videos.

Most of the content involved boys aged between six and 13 years old and ranged in severity from provocatively posed children to penetration with adults.

The court heard when the defendant was interviewed by police, he did not fully appreciate the seriousness of his actions, telling an officer "you might be surprised how many children would agree to those things".

The man's defence barrister Rick Taylor said since the investigation opened, his client's sexual appetite had diminished.

"The police investigation and the content being removed has had a significant affect on his chances of reoffending," Mr Taylor said.

He said his client was insulin dependent and asked Judge Kiernan Dorney that any sentence be served without time in prison. Judge Dorney said the man appeared healthy, but his age would be taken into consideration. "He still felt sexual pleasure from watching these (images and videos)," Judge Dorney said.

"It's not like he's a decrepit old man."

Judge Dorney noted the severity and extensiveness of the case. He described the files as a "harrowing depiction of images".

"They are disturbing in an extreme way and would be offensive to any reasonable person," he said.

"It is important that you did not sell (the exploitation files), but the scale in this case is incredibly significant; both the number of files and the seriousness of the material.

"This is not a victimless crime…there are real children involved."

The man was sentenced to six months jail for all three counts, served concurrently.

After six months, he will serve two years concurrently for making child exploitation material available and using a carriage service to access the material, as suspended sentences.

He will also serve three years concurrently for possessing the extensive material on parole.
