Gladstone offers smelter job opportunities

THERE'S a lot more than just LNG coming out of Gladstone. While the city is growing into one of the largest LNG export ports on the planet, it has been home to the largest aluminium smelter in Australia for more than 30 years.

Located on Boyne Island, about 20km south of Gladstone, Boyne Smelter (BSL) produces more than 560,000 tonnes of aluminium annually, and is looking to offer several apprenticeships to local school leavers.

General manager Joe Rea said the company was looking for apprentices across a range of trades, who were looking to take their career in a challenging new direction.

"The stand out to completing an apprenticeship at BSL is that our plant's size and complexity means apprentices receive myriad skills and experience during their training, then following completion opportunities can include progressing their career into different roles at BSL if they desire," Mr Rea said.

"Apprentices will rotate between operational departments during the course of their program.

"This ensures a BSL apprentice receives a wide variety of experience on different tools and processes, while their training is complemented with mentoring provided by our qualified tradespeople."

Once qualified, apprentices have a number of options as to the path their career takes - something Mr Rea has experienced first-hand, having himself started as an apprentice at Rio Tinto Aluminium's Weipa bauxite mine.

"Apprentices who complete the program can take a number of career paths - they might want to continue to specialise in their trade, go down the maintenance planning path, or become a technical advisor," Mr Rea said.

"If tradespeople show real leadership qualities they may wish to set the tools down and work within that area leading a team of maintainers. BSL has a number of crew leaders and superintendents who started off their careers as apprentices either at BSL or another organisation."

Given its coastal location and proximity to the reef, Gladstone offers a great lifestyle.
