Social ride for Rebels

THE head of the Rebels at Hervey Bay says police are wasting their time and taxpayer dollars by targeting a social motorcycle run this weekend.

Viv Jocumsen, acting president of the local Rebels chapter, says officers would be hard-pressed finding any illegal activity at their annual Roll the Dice Run.

"They waste the taxpayers' money something shocking," Mr Jocumsen said.

"People need to see that the police are wasting so many resources when they could be out catching pedophiles and proper criminals."

Mr Jocumsen was responding to reports that officers from Taskforce Hydra, Brisbane and the Sunshine Coast would be deployed to the bike run, a 185km ride starting at the Rebels' Urangan clubhouse on Saturday morning.

"I just don't think it's necessary," he said.

"They will never be able to touch anyone for anything bad at one of these social runs.

"But if they want to spend $100,000 chasing us around for the day, then good luck to them."

Hervey Bay police, however, have denied the boost in officer numbers, with the CIB's acting Senior Sergeant Dave Gild insisting the Rebels event was not high on the police radar.

"They do it every year," he said.

"They got bugger all (riders) last year. They only got about 20 or 30.

"We'll just be watching it to see who goes along."

The second annual Confederate Snake Eyes Roll the Dice Run was open to anyone, Mr Jocumsen said.

Riders paid $20 to participate and during the run would stop at five checkpoints to roll two dice.

Those recording the highest and lowest scores at the end of the event would win cash prizes.

"It's just a fun, social event," Mr Jocumsen insisted.

"See, there's this big hype that the media have caused that bikies are bad, that bikies carry drugs.

"We want to stipulate that the public has nothing to be afraid of. We're just people going for a social run."
