St Mary's new principal, Mr Knott

LAWRIE Knott can tick Maryborough off his list.

The new principal at St Mary’s Primary School has an unusual goal.

“I call myself the Wide Bay Man – I’m trying to live everywhere in the Wide Bay,” he joked.

The Bundaberg-born educator takes up the position after finishing up as head of primary at Xavier Catholic College in Hervey Bay.

He’s also been principal at schools in Gympie and Gayndah.

Mr Knott said he took the position at St Mary’s because the opportunity was ripe for the taking.

“I don’t like being in the one spot too long,” he said.

“The opportunity was there so I took the opportunity.”

Mr Knott said St Mary’s appealed to him because it had an attractive school environment and a lot of potential.

“It’s the first time in my career where I haven’t had to completely uproot my family to take a new job.

“I’m very excited about the challenge.”

St Mary’s Primary is a special project school, having a national literacy and numeracy partnership.

Mr Knott and wife Annette have two daughters – Lucy who is at university studying secondary school education and Stephanie who has just finished Year 12 and is taking a gap year.
