THE PROSPECT of 44 Gladstone cats being re-homed to Brisbane families may seem like a positive one but to Gladstone Friends of the RSPCA President Sarah Warry it is anything but.

In fact, Ms Warry said it's a "massive issue" that the state distribution branch in Wacol, Brisbane has to step in to help the Gladstone branch re-home the cats and kittens.

"The fact that these kittens and cats are getting re-homed is excellent, but it shouldn't be seen as a positive thing," she said.

"We can't re-home them here because we are just inundated by the amount of cats surrendered, there's nowhere for these cats and kittens to go.

"So the state has to step in and help."

SPCA volunteers John and Jennifer Nightingale said it's not the first trip they have made to Gladstone, but so far it was the biggest.

"This is a direct result of people just deciding not to get their pets de-sexed," Mr Nightingale said.

"My wife Jenny and I foster pets ourselves, and it's sad to see all of these cats and even kittens needing homes.

"But most of these cats, if not all will get homes in Brisbane somewhere."

It was just April 2 when The Observer reported The Friends of RSPCA Gladstone cat coordinator Betty Bridge turned away 22 kittens in one day the previous week because she didn't have the room for any more cats.

Ms Warry said even with the 44 re-homed from Betty's care; there is still quite a few living on the property.

"So many that we will have to organise for the state distributors to make another trip back to Gladstone in just week's time," Ms Warry said.
