Steve Waugh's son makes Australian under-19 side

THE rise of Austin Waugh through the cricketing ranks has continued with the son of legendary Australian Test captain Steve selected in a national under-19 side to play Sri Lanka.

Waugh, 17, was the player of the under-17 championships final late last year and joins a 15-player squad that also includes Will Sutherland, the son of Cricket Australia boss James.

The pair played together in a Big Bash curtain-raiser at the SCG last December, with Waugh smashing an unbelievable six and Sutherland, a bowler, hitting the winning runs in the final over.

After that match Graham Manou, the Cricket Australia pathways manager, said Waugh's resemblance to his famous father was uncanny.

"It was very scary, the first time I saw him, his mannerisms," Manou said.

"Genetically, I suppose you'd expect (it) but it's like he's watched a tape of his old man for years. They're very, very similar."

Young Victorian star Will Pucovski, who set a new run scoring record at the under-19 championships last year with 650 runs in eight games, was not considered for this squad as he continues to battle concussion issues.

Pucovski, considered a rare talent, suffered a concussion while fielding for Victoria in his Sheffield Shield debut at the start of February.

He hasn't played since and his immediate playing future remains unknown.

Former Test opener Matthew Elliot will coach the team in six games against Sri Lanka in Tasmania in April, with recently retired Test quick Ryan Harris his assistant.
