Stinky orchid draws a crowd
SUE Stepanoff made a special trip to Mackay's Orchid House to get a whiff of Stinky.
You could compare the pungent odour the rare orchid emits when in bloom with the likes of a dead wallaby that has been lying in the sun for a few days.
The stench stings the nostrils and makes you want to take a big step back but Stinky the orchid is capable of drawing a large crowd to Queens Park.
"I have just come in to see it," Ms Stepanoff said.
"I missed it the last time it was flowering."
The rare and unusual orchid had only a few flies buzzing around yesterday but Orchid House leading hand Sue McCormack was confident there would be a swarm soon enough.
"See, it's starting to come out nicely now," she said.
"It will soon get really big and really smelly."
The Bulbophyllum fletcherianum orchid looked slightly out of place among the other beautiful flowers in full bloom at the Orchid House.
But Stinky has a special place in Ms McCormack's heart.
"There is no rhyme or reason to when it is going to bloom," she said.
"I find it exciting.
"The stinky smell attractions flies, which in turn pollinate the flower," she said.
Have you ever seen a stinky orchid?
