Stosur to miss Wimbledon with hand fractures

SAM Stosur is officially out of Wimbledon because of stress fractures in her right hand.

The US Open winner will miss the world's most prestigious tournament for the first time since 2002.

Stosur notified All-England Club officials of her decision overnight after last week withdrawing from Eastbourne.

Her decision ends a run of 37 straight majors and robs Australia of a second women's seed at Wimbledon from July 3.

Daria Gavrilova, who last week terminated Stosur's 452-week reign as Australian No.1, and Ashleigh Barty will shoulder the bulk of Australia's singles hopes.

Stosur, 33, is expected to be fit for the US Open from August 28.

Stosur has consulted specialists since returning to Australia after the injury devastated promising her French Open campaign.

She first noticed the problem during a third-round victory over American Bethanie Mattek-Sands.

She was unable to practise before her fourth-round clash with eventual Roland Garros champion Jelena Ostapenko.

Despite the handicap, Stosur won the first set 6-1 before the pain returned, leaving her unable to hit her serve and forehand - her two most potent weapons - with full force.

Stosur was originally thought to have suffered muscle damage between the second and third fingers, but further scans showed bone fractures.
