Struggling Mariners lose their grip on Anderson

FOOTBALL: The Central Coast Mariners' Zac Anderson says his club's failure to secure a coach for next season has played a significant role in him not signing a contract extension.

The former Sunshine Coast junior has been with the struggling Mariners for three seasons but is yet to commit to the club beyond this campaign as he weighs up his options.

"The hard thing for me at the moment is that the Mariners don't have a coach for next season, which is always a deciding factor," Anderson said. "I want to keep improving and feel like I have a lot more to give.

"I want to keep learning and developing and if that is in Australia, so be it.

"If not, there is always the opportunity to go to Asia or Europe."

The Mariners have endured a horror 2014-15 season, winning just four matches from 24 fixtures, including Friday night's 6-1 loss to the Brisbane Roar.

Anderson said it had been the toughest season of his career.

"Things need to change and we have been trying to catch our tail for the past year and it has been difficult," he said.

"As a club, I think that we didn't recruit well and didn't bring in the foreigners that we thought we were going to bring in. The things that we worked on during the pre-season didn't pay off for us and when you are playing 27 games you really need to start the season off strongly."

Anderson said he did not want to think about the future too much at the moment and was focused on finishing the season as strongly as possible in the final three matches.

"They have come to me wanting to extend my contract beyond this season, but I have said to them that I want to play the season out," he said.

"For the first time in my career I want to lay my cards on the table and really think about where I want to push with my career.

"I am 23 now and I am hopeful to push on and maybe have a new challenge.

"I have had approaches from around the world and I will weigh it up at the end of the season."
