Sunbury blasted by coach

SUNBURY soccer coach Mark Sawtell did something he hates doing – it worked though.

Sawtell gave his players a real blast at half-time during the Fraser Coast League men’s first division showdown against Hervey Bay’s United Warriors at Maryborough’s Federation Park.

His team, the defending premiers and competition leaders, were losing and Sawtell was less then impressed with the performance.

His spray had the desired effect.

Sunbury, who are chasing a fifth consecutive premiership this season, came from 4-1 down to earn a 4-all draw against the second-placed United Warriors.

The result means Sunbury stay top and two points ahead of United Warriors.

Dave Chapman, Josh Linwood, Harley Kuhner were on target for Sunbury while an own goal also helped their cause.

Ben Sallustio, Sam Hill, Shane McClurg and Marty Chapman scored for United Warriors.

While Sawtell was happy with the result, he said he should not have had to resort to speaking his mind.

“I don’t like doing it but something had to be done,” Sawtell, who has been at the helm for the past two premiership triumphs, said.

“I really let them have it – you could hear a pin drop after I’d finished.

“You could say the message got through because the way they fought back was outstanding.”

In the other games of the round, honours finished even in the all-Hervey Bay showdown between Sandy Straits and Bayside Strikers after the game finished 3-all.

Jake Sandow (two) and an own goal did the damage for Bayside Strikers while Brad Mitchell, Nick Kjaer and Max Bowers replied for Sandy Straits.

Goals from Joel Neilsen (two) and Clinton Hamblin secured Doon Villa a 3-2 win against Kawungan.

Craig Smerdon and Dan Murren found the back of the net for Kawungan.

In the women’s first division competition, United Warriors continue to lead the way after goals from Lexi Core and Jess Clift were enough to beat Sunbury 2-1. Kirsty Frehmann scored for Sunbury.

In other games, Fraser Flames beat Doon Villa 6-2, Bayside Strikers defeated Kawungan 3-1 while Tinana downed Sandy Straits 3-2.
