Sunrise visit a real boost for tourism in Hervey Bay

THE whales that were broadcast live to thousands of Australians on Thursday morning last week have boosted tourism in Hervey Bay.

Whalesong operator Virginia Brigden told the Chronicle after the visit by Channel Seven's Sunrise weather team, passenger numbers have been good.

"I'd have to say it's helped raise the awareness to our area and the quality of whale watching we have," she said.

"In general it's portrayed the area wonderfully and most (whale) boats we've seen are getting good numbers."

Mrs Brigden said it wasn't only tourists getting out.

"I do believe we've had a boost from locals," she said.

Tourism Fraser Coast marketing co-ordinator Tas Webber said the Sunrise visit was a great coup for the area.

"It's exposure that you just can't buy," he said.

"For them to be able to come up to the region and enjoy their time in the region then that's great."
