SuperCoach NRL: Captain My Captain

HANDS up if you captained Teddy? What a nightmare. But, you have to be willing to run the gauntlet to earn the upside players like Tedesco offer. Double or nothing this week I say.

Each week I will delve into the stats that stick out, the best match-ups, form and even sometimes a gut feel to find you the best skippers of the week.

Without further ado …

Josh Dugan CTW | FLB (Sharks) vs. Dragons

48 points in his debut for the Sharks with a try certainly doesn't scream CAPTAIN, but the rumour is that Dugan will take the field at fullback (his preferred SuperCoach position) with Valentine Holmes moving to the wing. Projected to score 57 this week, that could well be huge 'unders'!

James Tedesco FLB (Roosters) vs. Bulldogs

I know, I know, you probably can't bear to look at your 'lobby' page to see your score and overall ranking after captaining this guy last week. But, let me just point out that averages are averages for a reason. If you captain Teddy every week you're coming out well in front. Against the Bulldogs in his career, Teddy has an average of 64.8 PPG with a high score of 73. I'm calling that high score to be beaten this week.

Gareth Widdop HFB (Dragons) vs. Sharks

How could I not mention Widdop after his unbelievable 106 points against the Broncos to start the season? Ben Hunt certainly didn't detract from Widdop's usage rate, and given the fact he is only in 7% of teams he presents as the perfect POD VC choice. Can he go back to back tons?

Other options … Paul Gallen, James Roberts, Anthony Milford, Johnathan Thurston

Cameron Smith HOK (Storm) vs. Tigers

The Tigers were super impressive against the Roosters in one of the biggest upsets in round one, but this is the Melbourne Storm - in Melbourne - we're talking about. Smith is projected to score 76 points this weekend, is the most popular captain choice (25.9% of teams) and just in case you're doubting yourself with this one … 80 career matches at AAMI Park, for an average of 79.8 PPG. That's insane.

Jason Taumololo 2RF (Cowboys) vs. Broncos

The script is there for the local derby, Friday night clash at Suncorp where these two teams have had some epic battles in recent times. Taumololo eased into the season with 66 points in 53 minutes against the Sharks last week, but I think this one could be a biggie against Matt Lodge, TPJ and co. The 2017 season average of 75.3 PPG suggests he has upside in the tank and these are the clashes he thrives in.

Shaun Johnson HFB | 5/8 (Warriors) vs. Titans

You may need to sit down for this. SJ was in vintage form in round one in the big win against the Rabbitohs for 86 points. If you didn't see the play just before half time - do yourself a favour and watch the highlights. I digress. SJ faces the Titans at Mt Smart Stadium this weekend. By way of career stats it doesn't get much better than this matchup, ever. Thirteen matches against the Titans for an average of 88.9 PPG and high score of 153 points, to go on top of a stellar 68.4 PPG average at the venue itself over 61 matches. Get on!

Other options … Sam Burgess, Angus Crichton, Nathan Brown, Tom Trbojevic

Good luck everyone, may the Orange Armband fall on the right man this week!
