State Govt backs Susan River's Hard Yakka boot camps
A FORMER special forces instructor in charge of a military-style training camp on the Fraser Coast will roll out the State Government's next boot camp for juveniles.
The Fraser/Sunshine Coast boot camp for at risk youth will be based at Susan River, where Operation Hard Yakka has operated a similar camp since 2008.
Following a lengthy consultation process, Attorney-General Jarrod Bleijie is set to announce Operation Hard Yakka as the successful tender on Wednesday.
"The organisation's specialised program has been run by a former special forces instructor since 2008, and has successfully helped more than 80 at-risk youth gain life and work skills," Mr Bleijie said.
"This boot camp will not be a holiday camp. Participants will learn about values, respect and responsibility.
"The camp involves physical training, adventure-based challenges, job search training, community awareness and indigenous culture."
Parents will also have the choice to get involved with a three-day training seminar designed to support them and their child in the next phase of the early intervention camp.
Of the 80 youth who have passed through Operation Hard Yakka, some have gone on to university, TAFE and the army.
The State Government has rolled out camps on the Gold Coast and near Cairns with plans for more in Townsville and Rockhampton.
