Sydney terror victim just ‘one year away from retirement’

NSW Premier Mike Baird has paid tribute to Sydney terror attack victim Curtis Cheng who was shot dead by a 15-year-old extremist this month.

The Hong Kong-born accountant was leaving the Parramatta police headquarters when Farhad Jabar opened fire and killed him.

"One tragic irony is that Curtis is a perfect example of how much we gain by maintaining a vibrant, multicultural society that not only welcomes but also embraces newcomers and their contribution - the very values that the terrorists want to frighten us into abandoning," Mr Baird said.

The 58-year-old loved soccer and was a committed Chelsea supporter.

"An ocker? No way. An Aussie? One hundred per cent," Mr Baird said.

Parliament heard Mr Cheng was a family man who adored his wife Selina and two grown children, Alpha and Zilvia.

"Curtis's plan was to retire around this time next year, when he turned 60, so that he could enjoy life with his many interests and his precious family," he said.

"That has been taken away."
