POLICE are warning drivers to remove their expired registration stickers, even if they now won't receive a replacement under the new system.

Despite rumours that it is no longer an offence to keep expired registration stickers on a vehicle, police are reminding motorists that this is still a fineable offence to leave the old sticker on.

Four weeks prior to the expiry of your registration, you would receive a Vehicle Registration Notice, followed by an Overdue Registration Fee Final Notice about three weeks after it expires if not renewed.

If you're caught driving an unregistered vehicle the maximum fine is $1800.

Confusion over old rego stickers - update here

If rego hasn't been paid after 30 days the vehicle will be classed as unregistered and uninsured.

In October last year, stickers were removed from the registration system to bring Queensland in line with all other Australian states and territories which are already sticker free.

It also reduces printing and production costs for the Department of Transport, saving around $3.5 million per year, and reduces red tape for motorists.

You can check registration expiry dates online at www.qld.gov.au/checkrego .
