Tattoo convention draws in the world's top artists

IT TAKES guts to get a tattoo but Caloundra man Ox has guts to spare.

The humble builder has tattooed internal organs across his chest, back and stomach, and to make more room for all that ink, had his belly button surgically removed.

He's had his tongue split, had countless body implants and four-and-a-half years ago had the whites of his eyeballs tattooed black.

So what on earth would drive someone to such extremes in the name of body art?

"It cheers you up, I find it a good stress relief," he said.

Another pastime Ox enjoys is suspension: hanging from wires attached to his piercings.

"Mind control is a big thing," he said.

"Once you can block out the pain you can do anything."

The first Annual Sunshine Coast Ink Attack Tattoo Convention drew tattoo fans and artists from across the world but no-one could quite match Ox's commitment to the art form.

"People consider it body mutilation but it's not mutilation, it's just another form of art," he said.

The convention opened at the Caloundra Events Centre yesterday and continues until 9pm today.

The event attracted 32 vendors taking part in 20 tattoo contests. The guest tattoo artist list included television stars Asaru Mushavu from the show Tattoos After Dark and Chris Torres from NY Ink.
