Coast's catholic teachers stop work for strike action

TEACHERS and school officers at both Xavier Catholic College and St Mary's Catholic Primary School stopped work during school hours yesterday between 11am and 1pm.

Xavier grade four teacher and Independent Education Union representative Peter Dewaard said about 70 staff at his school took part.

But at St Mary's Catholic Primary, principal Stuart McKinnon said only a "minimal number" participated.

The strike was organised by the Independent Education Union Australia - Queensland and Northern Territory branch.

Prior to the action, IEUA-QNT branch secretary Terry Burke said union affiliated teachers and other school staff would not work between 11am and 1pm, which included scheduled class time.

"Taking protected action during school time is a last resort for employees but the untenable position of Queensland Catholic school employers when it comes to workload and wages has left them no choice," he said.
