YOU can tell Madison Murphy loves his incredible afro, which is roughly 25cm in length.

This is how he knows taking part in the World's Greatest Shave is a worthy endeavour.

The Toowoomba teenager sheepishly allowed his golden locks to be sheered off at the Leukemia Foundation's public event at Grand Central on Saturday morning.

Having spent several months growing the impressive haircut, Madison said he'd be thinking of his great-aunt when he got it cut.

"My mum's aunty died from (leukemia), and she was my great-aunty - I'm doing it for her," he said.

About 50 people got their hair either shaved or coloured to help raise money for the national fundraising event.

Leukemia Foundation's Emma Quade said the Darling Downs was already on track to break last year's fundraising records.

"This region has raised over $150,000, which is the Darling Downs and south-west Queensland," she said.

"We've raised more money at this stage this year than we did at this stage last year.

"We've already reached $2 million across Queensland, which we were hoping for a goal of $3.7 million.

"My target for this region was $270,000 and I think we're going to beat that, so it's looking promising."

More than 400 people from Toowoomba have registered for the World's Greatest Shave.
