Bauple nut-cracking teen champ

IT takes a lot of dedication to become a nut-cracking champion - just ask Gympie's Callum Soutter.

The 15-year-old became the official winner of the Bauple Nut-cracking competition at the Bauple Nut Bash over the weekend, beating off fierce competition from eager rivals.

"I've been involved in an intensely brutal training regime for the past three months," Callum joked.

"It really helped to prepare to take out the title."

The young champion cracked six perfect Bauple nuts to take out this year's competition, with Arlea Taylor-Sloane's nut-cracking effort landing her in second place.

Bauple nut-cracking was just one of the highlights of the Bauple Nut Bash on Saturday, with people from across the Wide Bay traveling to the scenic town for the family-friendly event.

Bauple Nut Bash president Deb Brischke said the perfect weather conditions had made for a great day out.

"We had about 300 people through earlier in the day," Ms Brischke said.

"This year's event was moved to September so that we could have more hands-on activities for the kids.

"It's worked really well too; they all look like they are enjoying themselves."

Ms Brischke said the change of date had also brought in a new wave of nut-cracking competitors, which made for an interesting spectacle.

"There were definitely some fresh faces in the competition this year," she said.

"It's good to see more people coming through."
