Family in shock after pet was mauled by two rogue dogs

IN THE early hours of January 2, Pie Creek resident Michelle Barry was horrified to discover her beloved dog Tilly being mauled by two dogs in her own backyard.

Tilly was seriously injured in the attack and is currently in a serious condition with around-the-clock care at Gympie Veterinary Services.

The attack came a couple of hours after her other dog Tessa seriously injured herself on a barb-wire fence, purportedly seeing off the kelpie cross and a white dog earlier that night.

Ms Barry and partner Shaun Boyd said they had no idea the second attack was occurring because the dogs didn't make any noises before or during.

It was only once Tilly started to yelp in pain, waking Michelle's son David, that they realised something was happening.

"David chased them off with a stick," Ms Barry said.

Tilly sustained injures to her bowel and stomach and required emergency surgery.

"She's thrown herself in front of these dogs to protect the other animals," Ms Barry said.

In addition to Tilly being grievously injured, one of the families chickens died of shock from the attack.

Distressed by the incidents, Ms Barry spoke to several of her neighbours the next day and was shocked to discover that two have had similar occurrences with one losing a dog, and another a cat by dogs that are similar in appearance to those that attacked on Saturday morning.

Ms Barry said the incident is more alarming because there are young children living in the area.

"These dogs were so determined, they dug underneath the back fence in multiple areas," she said.

Ms Barry has spent more than $3000 so far on her beloved pet, but there are no guarantees that Tilly will pull through, with her vet telling her it was one of the worst cases she had seen.

"I'm lucky I'm a business owner, and I can afford to pay for her. If she makes it through this week, she'll be right," she said.

A council spokesperson said that unless people contact council directly through customer service, they are unable to follow up on dog attack incidents.
