They're supercat champs

THE Friers Offshore Racing Team are the supercat 1000HP champions after claiming the Australian offshore superboat championship in Hervey Bay.

Needing back-to-back wins to claim the title after starting the day in third place, the Friers won both of their races to claim their win.

Throttled by Brendan Frier and driven by his brother Chris, the Good Guys combination held off the Maritimo Mainlube team of Peter McGrath and Darren Nicholson to win the first race of the day.

The next win came in race two as the 13m-long superboat with twin 525hp engines seared through the bumpy waters along Hervey Bay's beach to again win ahead of their main opposition, the Maritimo Mainlube combination.

Brendan said he was delighted to be able to bring the title home to Mackay.

"It's a fantastic honour to have won the title and to end the day as champions," he said. "You never expect you can win such an event but it's just brilliant to have been able to have done it."

Good Guys representative Skye Gregory said the pair's achievement to claim the championship so earlier in their racing careers was remarkable. "They've only been racing for four years together so to pull it off really is a special effort," she said.

"To be the Australian champions is fantastic and to have them be from Mackay is even more special.

"They are two local guys who love the town, live in the town and love representing Mackay."

Gregory said next year the two would become the hunted as they began their offshore superboat championship campaign as defending champions.

"It's always harder to defend a title than it is to win one," she said.

"When you're number one, you have every other team chasing you.

"It's much easier to chase then to remain at the top. Both of the guys will look to stay the best in Australia come next racing season."
