Bay man helps mates steal more than $1000 worth of alcohol

A HERVEY Bay removalist, who helped two mates steal more than $1000 worth of alcohol from a country pub, has been fined.

The Hervey Bay Magistrates Court heard Lincoln Allan Willmot was travelling to Cherbourg with friends when they tried to stop for drinks at the Murgon pub but found it closed.

When they got to Goomeri, the Grand Hotel was also closed but rather than driving on, the group forced its way into the pub.

Police Prosecutor Sergeant Michael Quirk said the offenders had returned several times and taken cartons and bottles of rum and scotch.

Defence lawyer Michael Riddell said Willmot had moved to Hervey Bay to start fresh and had waited at the car during the theft.

Acting Hervey Bay Magistrate Graham Hillan said while he accepted Willmot was "not the ring leader" he still took part.

Willmot pleaded guilty to one count of break and enter.

He was fined $500 and ordered to pay $327.25, one quarter of the restitution sought by the pub.
