Thieves use hidden alcove to steal make-up from K-Mart

A HIDDEN alcove at K-Mart let thieves take potentially hundreds of dollars in goods from the Hervey Bay store.

Maryborough police Sergeant Bruce Hodgins said the alcove was discovered on Friday morning when staff at the Stockland store noticed a number of packages in the hidden area.

Thieves removed items such as make-up and jewellery from packaging before walking out of the store with them.

He said the hidden area was behind some shelving in the staff area where they assembled bikes.

"There is a gap in the wall they can climb over," Sgt Hodgins said.

He said the wall was about a metre high and the thieves would have also had to climb around shelving.

It is not known how long the thieves were using the alcove.

The K-Mart store opened in July last year.

A spokeswoman for K-Mart said as the matter was with police they could not comment.

Police scenes-of-crime officers were seen conducting investigations at the K-Mart store on Friday.

Police are still investigating the thefts.
