Thirty riders set to compete for state 500cc solos titles

ONE OF the biggest fields in recent years will contest the 2017 500cc state solos title at Maryborough Speedway on Saturday night.

The field includes just five seeded riders, which leaves the remaining 25 to battle for one of the leftover 11 spots in a pre-program time trial.

Maryborough Speedway president Wayne Moller said the size, and quality, of the field ensured it would be a blockbuster night of racing.

"It's probably the biggest field we've had for four or five years,” Moller said.

"Sometimes you might have eight or nine top riders then another five or six who, while good, probably won't make the final.

"You've got at least 16 riders here who could all challenge for the title.”

Local rider Joel Coyne, Zaine Kennedy, Jake Allen, Josh Pickering and Mason Campton are the five seeded riders. Among those forced to qualify are state under-21 champion Tyson Snow, Hugh Skidmore, Scott Warwick-Day, Declan Kennedy (pictured) and Jesse Thompson.

Moller said the sizeable field could be attributed to the rise in Maryborough's reputation as a destination for bikes.

"They appear to be coming back to our track, but even in the other classes the numbers are up,” Moller said. "It is testament to the work our volunteers have done to improve the course.”

The 15 riders miss the cut for the title will compete in the support classes.

It will be the second time solos have competed at Maryborough Speedway this season, after September's JTR Team Challenge. Solos were set to ride on November 18 but the sidecars state title was washed out and postponed.
