Thousands gather for dawn service in Hervey Bay

THE new flag at Freedom Park has been at half mast on Friday morning as thousands of people gather at dawn to honour veterans on Anzac Day.

The sound of bagpipes and drums preceded the marching veterans as they made their way to the park, applauded by a somber and silent crowd.

Hervey Bay RSL sub-branch president John Kelsey said the flag was donated by a veteran who served in Afghanistan.

He said it was fitting to honour both the original Anzacs who served in 1915, and the young men and woman who have served in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The flag was raised back up during the ceremony.
