Thunderbirds cool off West Coast Fever to clinch close win

THE Adelaide Thunderbirds held off the fast-finishing West Coast Fever to secure a 49-47 win in Perth yesterday, and go two points clear at top of the trans-Tasman Championship.

Carla Borrego top-scored with 29 goals from 39 attempts for the Thunderbirds, while Caitlin Bassett (35/39) starred for the hosts.

In yesterday's other game, Tegan Caldwell (22/25) led the way for the Melbourne Vixens in the 50-42 win against the NSW Swifts in Sydney.

A day earlier, the third-placed Queensland Firebirds secured a sixth win of the season after beating the Canterbury Tactix 76-51 in Christchurch.

Romelda Aiken scored 46 goals from 51 shots as the Queenslanders showed they had plenty of depth in their squad after captain Laura Geitz flew home for personal reasons on the morning of the game.

Acting captain Natalie Medhurst finished with the impressive return of 20 goals from 21 shots.

The result means the Firebirds have now won five of the six meetings between the sides.

Defending champion, Waikato/Bay of Plenty Magic, complete the round against the Central Pulse in Hamilton tonight.
