Campaign to Sack the Premier Now!

DISSATISFIED with Premier Anna Bligh’s decision to sell off assets in Queensland, Gympie man Ian Forbes has started a campaign to get Ms Bligh sacked.

Mr Forbes has posted flyers around town and placed an advertisement in yesterday’s Leisure Time for a citizen’s action pack, which contains a book of rights and petitions, to try and remove Ms Bligh as the Premier of Queensland.

“For far too long the Premier has disregarded the will of the people on a number of issues. It’s gone beyond the pale,” he said.

If a majority of citizens followed the right procedure and informed the governor of their lack of confidence in Ms Bligh, then the crown had “a legal obligation to listen,” Mr Forbes said. “Our democratic rights extend way beyond the ballot box.”

So far, Mr Forbes has sold about 50 Sack the Premier Now! packs.

“It’s time to impose our own level of accountability on the administration.”

And that time is now, Mr Forbes, a former Army officer, said.

Mr Forbes warned the first in Queensland’s assets — Forestry Plantations Queensland — would be sold off in a matter of weeks and Queenslanders couldn’t afford to wait for the next election before they did something.

“They’re the people’s assets; the people don’t want them sold,” he said. “It’s another example of the arrogant government overstepping its legal authority to claim ownership of something that the people own and disposing of those assets against the will of the people.”

But the asset sell-off wasn’t the only thing Mr Forbes was unhappy with; he also voiced his disapproval of the plan to dam Traveston and forced council amalgamations.

He said the Premier’s popularity was dwindling every day and this was one way for people to do something about how they felt.

“We can exercise our democratic rights every day of the week...Democracy isn’t a once-in-three year event.”

In his pack, Mr Forbes has included enough material for two people to petition against the Premier at a cost of $10. The price covers the cost of production and, he said, any profit would go towards making more packs.
