Time to imagine potential for downtown Maryborough

MARYBOROUGH'S central business district is bursting with potential ready to be unlocked when the Fraser Coast Regional Council begins implementing ideas gathered through the Imagine This City project.

That's the view of councillor Daniel Sanderson, who is thrilled to see more than $3 million committed to the revitalisation project in the council's 2013-14 budget.

"Four-hundred-thousand dollars will go towards construction design and $2.6 million will be used in the actual construction in 2014-15," he said.

"This investment will ensure Maryborough has a vibrant and active CBD."

Cr Sanderson acknowledged that CBD was struggling with shop vacancies, but said the council was determined to get the project design right to "lay foundations for the future".

Mayor Gerard O'Connell agreed, saying he saw enormous potential in the area.

"I think the concept of boutique and specialist-store shopping still has a place in Maryborough's CBD," he said.

"There are some very strong players in there."
