Tiny Courtney stars in first competition

FOR some, making your debut in a regional event can be a nerve-racking experience.

But for others, like Courtney Clark, they seem to relish the chance to finally shine on a competition stage.

The Hervey Bay gymnast is jumping with joy after blitzing the Sunshine Coast Invitational Competition.

One of 17 juniors from the Wide Bay Gymnastics Club who travelled to Woombye for the event, Courtney excelled in all apparatuses.

She won vault and beam, and finished second on floor and fifth on bars to take the overall crown against other gymnasts from Bundaberg, Sunshine Coast, Cooroy and Brisbane.

The eight-year-old's outstanding performance was enough for her to pass level one and she is now on track to complete her level three by the end of the year.

WBGC publicity officer Vickie Riphagen said she was a gifted athlete with plenty of potential.

"She is flexible, strong and dedicated, which is most important," she said.

"I was impressed with how perfect she was with everything she did; how slow and steady her routines were, she wasn't throwing her self around, she had great control."

Courtney took up the sport in New Zealand and loved it so much she continued with it when she moved to Hervey Bay earlier this year.

Since joining the Urangan-based WBGC, the Urangan Point State School student has shown a willingness to listen and absorb information.

Riphagen said the stellar debut of Courtney should give hope to other young gymnasts aiming to achieve immediate success.

"Everyone succeeds at their own level, but if you're dedicated, listen and learn, anyone can achieve success early on," she said.
