Top knot close to top prize
A PHOTO of a top knot pigeon and her two newborn babies came close to scooping $5000 in prize money for the Maryborough Technology Challenge this week.
Federal member for Wide Bay Warren Truss entered the snapshot into the 2010 Politzer Prize – a photographic competition for Australia’s politicians.
First prize was $5000 and, if he won, Mr Truss planned to donate the lot to the Tech Challenge.
However, Maranoa MP Bruce Scott beat Mr Truss – and 50 other pollies – to first prize with his shot of pelicans in outback Queensland.
The pigeons were awarded highly commended in the people’s choice category.
“I’m very happy with the result although it would’ve been nice to get the $5000 prize because the Tech Challenge has lost their major sponsors,” Mr Truss said.
Mr Truss said he snapped the birds a couple of months ago while they were nesting in a hedge outside his Maryborough home.
“We’re very lucky to live on an acre with lots of wildlife,” he said. “Last year I entered a photo of a koala.”
