Torbanlea ready for Picnics

MORE than 550 people will enjoy the Torbanlea Picnic Races from the comfort of a corporate marquee on Saturday with the tents being officially included for the first time this year.

Spokesperson Edith Rutherford said the corporate marquees had been hugely popular and had been booked out by groups of 10 to 100 people.

“If someone is really keen they could try giving us a call on the chance that, as the marquees are put up, there’s room for another one,” she said.

Ms Rutherford said the marquees were already under construction at the grounds while camper trailers, caravans, tents and horses had also begun arriving.

She said campsites were still available and she encouraged campers to get in on Friday night to avoid bottlenecks on Saturday.

Ms Rutherford said that, given the past few years of drought, the committee had organised Brisbane company Grass Go Green to apply a special coating to the grass on the track to be ready for race day.

But recent rains had settled the dust so the procedure wasn’t needed.

She said rain had not stopped Torbanlea’s race day yet and the weather prediction pointed to clearing skies on Saturday.
