School celebrates awards victory with special parade

TORBANLEA State School celebrated its win at the Fraser Coast Business Awards with a special parade for its 400 students yesterday morning.

The school took out Education Provider of the Year at the awards ceremony on Thursday night.

Principal David Hillhouse said students and teachers celebrated yesterday morning before the award took pride of place on display in the reception area.

"It is as much their (students) award as it is the staff members," he said.

The school also won an unofficial award from MC for the night, Fraser Coast Mayor Gerard O'Connell, for best cheer squad.

Almost half of the school's 46 staff members were on hand at the awards to cheer the school on, while several parents were also in the crowd.

"We've got a very tight-knit community out here," Mr Hillhouse said. "Our guys have been working very hard over the past few years."

This year was the first time the school had been nominated.

Torbanlea State School was one of 16 businesses to win an award on Thursday night.
