Tourists arrive on Coast for celebrations

TOURISTS are taking advantage of the fantastic weather and making the trek to Fraser Island to spend the last few days of 2015.

Dozens of holidaymakers were waiting to catch the barges and make their way to the island to catch a glimpse of the World Heritage Listed site.

Among those were a number of European tourists who were drawn in from by the warmer weather.

Andrea Rast from Switzerland and Stijn Mues of Belgium were not too sure what they would find once they arrived at the popular attraction but were keen to check out what the island has to offer.

"Well actually, we had some friends who told us to come here," Andrea said.

Andrea and Stijn had arrived in Hervey Bay on Tuesday and planned to spend just the night on the island.

The pair travelling down the coast in a campervan.

While many waiting at the dock were from overseas, some locals were ready to enjoy the island.

Hervey Bay resident Lucy Priest and her family were taking friends over to show them around.

She said the last time they had been to the island was about 18 months ago.

"When family comes from England we go over," she said.

Mrs Priest said her young children enjoy the time spent on the island. "We would love to see (the barge) back at Urangan," she said.
