Mariners take on rep team in trial
IT MAY be called a trial game but the Fraser Coast Mariners know that they are in for a tough day at the office today.
You can be sure a rugby union team from Bundaberg will make sure of that.
The Mariners will tackle a Bundaberg representative team in one of the curtain raisers to the Sunshine Coast Stingrays and the Darling Downs showdown in the Queensland Rugby Union Country Championship at Urangan’s Walkers Road Sports Complex.
Mariners prop Iain Everiss said he was sure there would be no lack of commitment from either team today.
“I don’t think there are such things as friendly games in rugby union,” the 41-year-old said.
“Besides, I am sure that they (Bundaberg) will be out for a bit of revenge after we won the Bundaberg Rugby Union Spring competition undefeated last December.
“This game is a great opportunity for them to try and get it (revenge) but you can be sure we’re not about to just turn-up to make up the numbers.
“This is a game between Bundaberg and the Fraser Coast – no-one will be keen to lose it.”
Everiss said the Mariners, who play in the Sunshine Coast Rugby Union competition, would not be at full-strength for the game.
“We’re down a bit on personnel but its great chance for some of the new faces to put their hands up and show us what they can do,” Everiss said.
One of the new players to impress Everiss in training is Kiwi Jason Cudby.
The lock has a pretty impressive resume.
He’s played for Canterbury at under 19 and Colts levels, South Canterbury and Manawatu.
Everiss said he was pleased Cudby was on his team.
“He’s a big unit,” Everiss said.
“I am so glad that I won’t have to try and tackle him.”
