IT'S more or less become Donald Trump's catchphrase, indeed analysis of the US President's Twitter shows he's used the phrase "fake news" more than 25 times since the start of the year.

In the past two months Trump has labelled everything from negative polls, to reports of a poor turnout at his inauguration, to accusations people in his campaign team ad contact with Russia in the lead up to the election as; "fake news".

However during his first solo press conference since becoming the leader of the most powerful nation on earth Trump has encountered the humbling experience of being fact checked, live on air.

"You said today that you had the biggest electoral margin since Ronald Reagan," Alexander began before pointing out Obama's margin was larger before the President returned fire.

"I was talking about Republicans," Trump said before Alexander rattled off George W Bush's winning margin which was far larger than Trump's.

"I don't know, I was given that information. I actually, I've seen that information around," Trump responded.

"But it was a very substantial victory, do you agree with that?"

The reporter Mr Alexander replied: "You're the President."
