Two new sightings of the elusive Mary River crocodile
TWO new sightings of the elusive Mary River crocodile have been reported in the past week in the waters off Beaver Rock, near Maryborough.
The large reptile was first spotted in the river last May, sparking a full-scale attempt to trap the scaly critter.
Wildlife rangers have tried to trap the croc since it was first confirmed to be living in the region, but attempts to lure the reptile into a baited trap have proven unsuccessful.
Department of Environment and Heritage Protection Wildlife operations manager Mike Devery said a land-based survey of the Mary River was conducted on Tuesday following reported sightings on Sunday and Tuesday morning.
"Previously, land and vessel-based surveys of the river were conducted following a sighting report to the EHP on January 10," Mr Devery said.
"Although no evidence of a crocodile has been seen by departmental staff in the course of the most recent surveys, the public should remain cautious and be 'crocwise' when in this location."
