Two years probation after bushland bolt halted

A MAN who ran from police in bushland near Howard while doused in petrol has been sentenced in court.

Asher Alfred Baxter-Sayers, 19, pleaded guilty in the Hervey Bay Magistrates Court on Wednesday to obstructing police, possessing a knife and possessing dangerous drugs.

The court heard that on July 27 last year, Asher and his brother, Kym David Baxter-Sayers, 24, were spotted by a police traffic unit travelling toward Howard.

The Baxter-Sayers' vehicle stopped in the middle of Government Rd and would not comply with a police direction.

The brothers then exited the car and Kym doused Asher and the car with fuel and set it alight.

They then ran from police through bushland - but were arrested.

The court heard the Baxter-Sayers' father had died on July 22.

Asher was bailed but was involved in another police incident on August 13.

Police were called to Centrelink after he had an aggressive argument with a female.

He was found to have a knife with an 8cm blade in his possession.

After failing to appear in the Brisbane Magistrates Court, Asher told police he "didn't care".

However, he later turned himself into Hervey Bay police on March 6.

Defence lawyer John Milburn said Asher had spent 19 days in custody and had settled down since he was first arrested.

"(He's) presented in a more stable state than when I first saw him," he said.

Magistrate Graeme Tatnell said Asher's brother Kym was the "main offender" in the incident.

Mr Tatnell sentenced Asher to two years probation.
