Union worried about inmates escaping due to overcrowding

OVERCROWDING at the Maryborough Correctional Centre has the Together Union concerned about inmates escaping, ABC Radio has reported.

Queensland's Corrective Services Department said the prison could officially house 500 prisoners but 537 were in custody.

The union told ABC Radio there had been overcrowding at the jail for several months but staff numbers had not increased and it had written to the Attorney-General for an explanation.

ABC Radio reported the union said an increase was unsafe for staff and it was worried about prisoners escaping.
