Unpaid carers call for better deal

THE 2.6 million unpaid carers in Australia need a better deal, despite the commitments under DisabilityCare Australia, according to Carers Australia's election platform.

Despite the progress under the disability scheme, many - including unpaid carers of those with a disability - will still not be covered by the program.

The crux of Carers Australia's platform was that no unpaid carer be worse off under the new arrangements or recent aged care reforms.

Carers were seeking a guarantee that funding would be maintained and increased in line with an expected rise in the number of unpaid carers around the country.

The group also sought more funding for young carers, including outreach and counselling services to help them deal with the added pressure of caring for loved ones.

It also calls for more support for carers to stay working, included extra flexibility for unpaid carers, as well as a $50 a week rise in Newstart payments, which many carers rely on.
