UPDATE: Codey’s family hit $5000 fundraising target
UPDATE: THIS morning the family of Codey Burnett hit their $5000 crowd-funding target, after fundraising for the past 17 days.
The Burnetts have been trying to raise the funds to bring their son’s body home to Tara from Bundaberg, where Codey took his own life on Good Friday.
Codey was 21 years old.
Boz Burnett, Codey’s dad, said the family had been quoted just under $8000 to bring their son home and for funeral costs.
Codey’s sister Jazmyn Burnett shared the good news online, thanking the outpouring of kindness they had received, a lot of it from complete strangers.
“We are almost (there)!!!” Jazmyn wrote.
“It’s amazing to see how much love and support we are getting. It makes this hard time a little less stressful for my family. Thank you so much to everyone who has helped.”
As well as the Go Fund Me account, Codey’s family and friends had also been fundraising through sausage sizzles in Chinchilla and Tara and collection tins in some of the shops in Tara.
Codey’s bosses at Bundaberg Mexican restaurant Guzman y Gomez, Warwick and Shar Jones, who the young man had worked for, for nearly two years, urged his local community to help the Burnett family.
“We need leaders and other business people in the region to do what they can,” Mr Jones said.
“We need to put him to rest – every little bit helps.”
Close family friend to the Burnetts, and the creator of Codey’s Go Fund Me page, Rachel Maree said thanks to all the donations they’d received, they had finally been able to set a date for his funeral – which will be next Friday on April 22.
“Everyone who knew him or felt like they knew him is more than welcome to come,” Rachel said.
“We have all been extremely overwhelmed by the support we have received so far.
“It’s so heart warming to know so many people are behind us and are doing what they can to help.”
Rachel reiterated the family’s desire to get the message out to other people in the community who might be suffering the way Codey was.
“We want suicide awareness so people who need help can find it and know who to turn to. We’re hoping Codey’s story helps someone reach out so another family doesn’t have to go through this.”
Codey James Burnett’s funeral service will be on Friday, April 22, at 11am at Tara Catholic Church.
You can still donate to Codey’s Go Fund Me account if you would like to help his family bring him home.
