The upside of remaining in jail is the free food

AFTER being sentenced in court, Craig Alan Atkins told the magistrate there were some positives to remaining in custody.

"Free food," he muttered.

The 30-year-old pleaded guilty in the Hervey Bay Magistrates Court on Thursday to two counts of wilful damage and driving without a licence.

He was caught on January 2 at Dundowran Beach driving a blue Toyota.

Police Prosecutor Senior Constable Jeanette Grigoris said Atkins was disqualified from driving until March, 2019, after previous offences.

And on January 3, Atkins damaged an LCD television, carpet, walls and windows at a home in Howard.

Magistrate Graeme Tatnell sentenced Atkins to 12 months prison for both offences and is eligible for parole on July13.
