Upskilling gave Andy the edge he needed to land mining job

ANDY McLeod was between contracts and partway through CQUniversity's Diploma of Project Management TAFE course when he was able to re-enter the mining industry.

"I was taking some time off and looking to add to my skills and make myself more employable in an increasingly competitive workplace," he said.

"I'd worked on some projects in the past, but found myself needing more insight on some of the financial and control aspects."

It was while Mr McLeod was undertaking the diploma that he was contacted to return to a position as a project manager.

"This is not a conventional project manager role as it is part of a detailed scope project, but the skills I added from the TAFE course are definitely very relevant," he explained.

"I enjoyed the course and had good interaction with the teacher; he was readily accessible, easy to approach, got back to me promptly.

"About 10-15% of the course put focus on areas that I have done previously in an ad-hoc manner. I now do these tasks in a more sequenced manner and secure better outcomes."

He said the Diploma of Project Management provided a good grounding in developing, scoping, planning, implementing and measuring, applicable in most, if not all industries.

"It's a practical course with good examples and scenarios which makes you think. It's not as easy as you think at first, but it does challenge you."

CQUniversity's Diploma of Project Management is available to study online with intakes throughout the year. Those interested can find out more about this course and many other TAFE certificates and diplomas by searching 'CQUni TAFE' online.
