Kokomo II to dock and stock in bay
A LUXURY super yacht will be calling Hervey Bay home for the next few days as it stocks up on supplies for a Whitsunday winter.
One of the crew of the Kokomo II said they had just sailed up from Brisbane and were docking in the Hervey Bay Marina to “clean up, stock up and do some repairs” before they head further north.
The Whitsunday Islands are said to be the destination of choice over the winter for the 37.5m (123 ft) motor yacht.
Kokomo II once operated as a charter yacht in the Whitsunday's under the name of Achilles II, offering accommodation for up to 10 guests in five luxury cabins.
It is now owned by property tycoon, Lang Walker, who in 2006 sold the bulk of the assets in his company, Walker Corporation, for about $1.2 billion.
The crew of Kokomo II were hard at work, scrubbing the ship down on Wednesday afternoon, and joked about which one would have to brave the marina's notorious resident bull shark by going under water to clean the hull.
“No shark sightings yet” laughed one of the crew as he hosed the sides of the vessel.
The super yacht certainly caused quite a stir when it entered the marina, as it dwarfed the surrounding vessels.
Local man Lloyd Bud was on his 15m (50 ft) catamaran Sea Eagle when the huge motor yacht pulled in beside him.
“It's certainly the biggest one I've ever seen in the Hervey Bay Marina” said Mr Bud.
