Urangan scoops finals pool at school futsal titles

URANGAN State High School was a force to be reckoned with at the Fraser Coast School Futsal Titles this week.

A record 59 teams from as far as Brisbane converged on Hervey Bay PCYC for the third staging of the annual event, which wrapped up on Tuesday, with Urangan emerging as the big winners.

After two days of competition, Urangan had teams progress through to four of the nine age group grand finals with their under-14 girls, U16 girls and U19 boys going on to triumph.

Gympie SHS also fared well taking a treble of titles, while Maryborough's Aldridge State High School won the U14 boys' grand final and was runner-up in U16 boys.

Wide Bay futsal development officer Rae Harding said this year's tournament delivered plenty of thrilling matches and explosive action.

"It was a very big two days with all three courts going from 9am to 7pm," she said.

"When we started this in 2011, we held it especially for Wide Bay teams but it has grown in popularity.

"Last year we had about 32 teams but after the word got out we got 59 teams enter because everyone wants to come up to the Fraser Coast."

Players had extra incentive to perform well with three Country Queensland selectors maintaining a close watch at the tournament.

Those lucky enough to be picked for the National School Futsal Championships in September will be notified in the mail, and Harding said many Fraser Coast players could expect a letter soon.

"Looking at what was displayed on the court and speaking to three selectors, the standard of players at the Fraser Coast School Titles was very high," she said.
