Chronicle photographer's sports photo is state's best

A PHOTO capturing Hervey Bay rugby league players as they struggled against the rain at Stafford Park has won Chronicle photographer Valerie Horton first place in sport photography at the prestigious statewide Clarion awards.

Valerie, who was also named APN's sport photographer of the year last year, said that she was surprised to hear her name announced as the winner, but it was lovely to be acknowledged for her work.

"I certainly didn't expect it," she said.

The judges' comments were particularly pleasing, Valerie said, as they referred to the image capturing the players' battle against the elements, which was what Valerie had been aiming to achieve.
