FOR three decades John Cawcutt has traversed Queensland fighting fires and travelled to countries such as New Zealand, Indonesia and Japan to perform search and rescue.

Now, Mr Cawcutt is making the Fraser Coast his home after being appointed Assistant Commissioner in the Queensland Fire and Emergency Services.

The firefighter has just started in the new role looking after the North Coast region which spans from the Sunshine Coast to Bundaberg.

Mr Cawcutt said he could not be more thrilled to call the Fraser Coast his home and was looking forward to the challenges of his new role.

"We were saying we get a bit of everything here," he said.

"You get cyclones, flooding and then the bad bushfire season as well."

Mr Cawcutt has spent a majority of his career in south-east Queensland, but for many years was a part of the urban search and rescue team.

This team is one of only two internationally accredited urban search teams in the country is and if often deployed for major international events.

"I have travelled to Indonesia and New Zealand and sent crews to Japan and Soma," he said.

But Mr Cawcutt is leaving the urban search and rescue life behind.

The region's new top firefighter has spent the first two weeks on the job visiting stations to meet the fire crews on the ground.
