VW Kombi, Kia Stinger and Toyota Camry trump America

MAINSTREAM car manufacturers stole the spotlight from the big guns at the opening of the Detroit motor show today.

Toyota unveiled its sporty makeover of its Camry sedan, while Kia had the premium marques taking notice with its new Stinger GT four-door fastback.

This year's North American International Auto Show in the "Motor City" followed the trend of other car shows where there is reduced modern fanfare...manufacturers instead revealing key models before the opening day to maximise exposure.

There were few surprises, with the highlights including the unveiling of Audi's new large SUV in the Q8, Mercedes-Benz officially revealing its E-Class Coupe, Infiniti showing the QX50 and Lexus launched the flagship LS sedan.

Among the quirky offerings was Volkswagen's ID Buzz, which is an all-electric version of the old Kombi.

The Buzz has a fully automated "ID Pilot" mode, and it doesn't have conventional instruments. Key information is instead projected onto the head-up display into the driver's field of vision - in 3D, in virtual format onto the road.

"By 2025, we want to sell one million electric cars per year, making e-mobility the new trademark of Volkswagen," Volkswagen Brand Board of Management chairman Dr Herbert Diess said.

"The new e-Golf already offers 50 percent more electric range. From 2020 onwards we will then launch our ID family, a new generation of fully electric, fully connected cars. It will be affordable for millions, not just to millionaires."
