Gai Waterhouse is confident Toowoomba Cup star can back up

TOOWOOMBA Cup winner Pornichet has firmed as favourite for tomorrow's Doomben Cup.

The Vespone entire (pictured) carried 60.5kg in last Saturday's win and was an early $4.50 market leader but came into $4.20 after being drawn in barrier four.

The Gai Waterhouse-trained four-year-old will have two starts in seven days for the first time since he arrived in Australia in the middle of last year but Waterhouse said she was confident he could record a maiden win at Group 1 level.

"He is absolutely terrific," Waterhouse told Racing Ahead.

"I love back-up horses and I think that this is a very exciting horse. I told them at Toowoomba that hopefully you will see him in the Cox Plate in October."

Leebaz, at $5, looks to be the strongest challenger and will be taking form into the Doomben Cup after a win in the Group 2 Hollindale Stakes at the Gold Coast on April 25.
